School Staff are BURNT OUT!

Educators, School Social Workers, Psychologists, Counselors, and other School Staff often serve as the first line of defense against a host of societal issues that have reached a crisis point: funding for education, mental health issues, financial and resource scarcity, community and domestic violence, marginalization and intolerance, and others. In the face of pervasive scarcity and unpredictability, school staff still find ways to persist for the betterment of others, often leading to intense levels of emotional exhaustion, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.

We can relate!

Laurie is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who left the school system due to burnout and disability. Ean is a former teacher and instructional coach seeking a healthier work-life balance. Our first-hand experiences and observations reinforce our framework for burnout:

  1. Scarcity, unpredictability, urgency, and a lack of meaningful accommodation lead to unrealistic expectations at work.

  2. Inability to meet expectations at work often leaves compassionate professionals blaming and shaming themselves, leading to isolation, toxic dis-stress, bodily inflammation, dis-ease, and dis-ability.

  3. Burnout and compassion fatigue leads to diminished capacity and ineffectiveness in professional roles.

Join us to read and discuss Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle,
by Emily Nagoski PhD and Amelia Nagoski DMA.

Together we will:

  • Learn about stress response patterns and how to return your body to a state of relaxation.

  • Understand why it’s important to complete your stress cycle at the end of each day.

  • Experiment with various techniques to find what works best for you.

  • Develop sustainable self-care routines and support one another in maintaining them.

  • Maximize nonjudgemental self-compassion and minimize blame and shame.

  • Improve self-advocacy skills needed to obtain support and accommodation.

Although Burnout was written specifically for women, the concepts are generalizable and our groups are open to all school staff.
